3 Common causes of blocked gutters

blog-common-blocked-gutters-min

Gutter blockages are extremely common any time of year. However whilst it’s easy to spot the signs of a clogged gutter – sagging, excess water – many people are left unsure what it is that’s causing the blockage. Read on for three of the most common problems.

Top causes of blocked gutters

Leaves

By far the most frequent cause of a blocked gutter, it’s extremely common for leaves and twigs to blow from trees onto your roof and into your gutters. Trees are often located close to gutters, so it’s natural for leaves to find their way there, especially in autumn. The longer the leaves remain in there, the wetter they will get, and wet leaves are even harder to remove from a gutter; this can develop into mould and birds can even make their home in your gutter.

Moss

Moss is commonplace on most roofs, but it can also get into your gutter and cause blockages. Moss can be particularly thick, making it a particularly nasty blockage, and mould can be of similar consistency. When it rains, simply adding more water to the moss doesn’t wash it out, so having a professional look at your guttering can alleviate the issue. Using a gutter vacuum can remove the moss from your gutter.

Snow

When it snows, a well-insulated roof can melt the snow. A gutter doesn’t have any insulation though, so it’s possible for the snow to melt, drip down the gutter and freeze again; this is how we get icicles, after all. Icy gutters can lodge leaves and moss and the more water that flows down the gutter, the more that freezes. This is a big issue in the winter and one that can be solved by getting a professional to come and clear your gutter of all the debris that has collected in it.
